The Way We Work

E-mail Print

We work to encourage and support people to express their views with regard to their health and treatment. We do not take action on the basis of what we think is best, we only take action as requested by individuals using our services.

We are rights-based and emphasise autonomy and self-determination, advocates do not express their own opinions on what's best for someone. Our role is to provide information, discuss options and act according to the individual's expressed wishes. It is always up to the individual themselves to determine the duration and the extent of the work.

Our work is confidential to the person using our service and the organisation. This means that information is only passed on to other agencies at the request or with the permission of the individual using our service: the exception being where there are issues of safety and this is outlined in our confidentiality policy.

We are an independent organisation and are not part of statutory mental health services, but we seek to work positively with statutory and other services in order to effect the changes needed and desired by the individuals using our service.
